SILVIA PEREIRA Public art installation to be presented in World fairs. SELF-INDULGENT NATIONS This art piece presents groups of monumental flags of all nations in public space, ripped by the simulated weather effects of erosion. The decayed look of the flags represent in this context the true historical course of the nations, with the intention to unveil the charisma of the occult faults committed in the name of human-beings as Patriots, often tended to be hidden or euphemized. Thus a sense for devastating the feeling of patriotism urges. The flags will measure 14.3 by 25 meters and will wave on flagpoles with a height of 50 meters. They will be positioned and interrelated in groups, in the same way as the countries of the planet are delimited by frontier lines, fragmenting the land as territory such as regions, countries, continents, or politically established united groups of nations like EU. Maps at an inferior scale will be thus reproduced, re-sized and drawn at the surface of the ground by the flagpoles, on that flags representing a region or a country will be hoist intentionally torn and aesthetically ripped with strong nuances of sublime. 1st group of flags: The North American continent represented and/or USA flags of the federal states unified representing the country 2nd group of flags: The EU group of nations will be the set, representing the drawing of its own flag, where each “star” of the flag symbol will be replaced by the correspondent flag on the circle. A circle of monumental flags placed as the flag of EU. 3rd group of flags: Flags of the constituent countries of the former Yugoslavian Union set as the territory boundaries of the old country. In general, historic episodes must be analyzed in order to intervene properly accordingly to the political contexts involved in the lands where this art work will be exhibited. This art work is intentionally thought to be presented at World fairs, despite its strong polemic meaning applied in this context.
