We will carry pieces of artwork created in Texas into Mexico where we will then hand assemble the work at a yet to be determined rented space. The artwork being brought into Mexico consists of 500 works on wood, metal, paper and other found objects. This will then be a site specific installation and the configuration will depend upon the actual site we are seeking to cover a casita (small house) with these images. The work consists of text recorded on the US side of the US/Mexico border. Much of the work is fragments of advertisements, slogans and is in Spanglish.
This installation will be filmed and documented by the artists and local media.
For no less than a month this will exist as a form of public art and individuals can go into Mexico and view the work as well as the residents of the community in Mexico are able to visit the public art space. In addition the public is invited to assist in the assembling process including configuring the artwork in the initial installation and de-installation.
This process and final work will be filmed and available via the internet.
The motivation for the work and concept behind the project is a commentary on the relationship of commerce between the border towns of Mexico and the US. Basically, this would be a fun installation that would be a great joy to participate with the communities of Deep South Texas and Northern Mexico.
Expectation for the concept to completion of the public art installation would be three months. We are searching for an appropriate site to be rented for at least 1 month and are planning for the installation to take place in Spring Break 2010 when many US college students converge on the Border for fun in the sun. The venue will be determined by availability and funding and will be in a Northern Mexico Border town.
Month one will be securing site and promoting the installation of the project including location and installations dates and times. This includes public relations, press conferences and working with local and Mexican publications regarding the project. Finalizing and completing the 500 Fragments that will be assembled in Mexico.
Month two the assembling of the actual “casita” with the 500 pieces of art a collaboration between the artists and US and Mexican residents. Open House and artists reception including a community Pachanga with a small reproduction of the casita in the form of a piñata..
Month three includes a media wrap-up and de=installation of the assembled in Mexico casita. The public from both sides of the Border and beyond are invited to participate. Website of the made in america, assembled in mexico project will be launched.
