PROJECT: CHOCOLATE VIDEO – September 2012

The idea is to create a video where I use the images of someone (myself) eating large quantities of chocolate. I then want to include images of my body interacting with chocolate. I am thinking of pouring chocolate syrup down my back. All images would be close up, so only the chocolate and the major body part (ie. mouth or nape of the neck) are on the screen.

Looks are the embodied experience and building identity through incorporation. I want the eating to be like an obsessive desire (ravenous while also being repulsive) and the bodily images to be a smoothing and exploratory experience.

INTENTION: Allow the viewer to feel the anticipation and disgust of binge eating.

DISPLAY: Flat TV on the wall with a plate of "fresh" brownies underneath.

The shoot happened on Friday. I couldn't eat very much chocolate! It was gross and disgusting and I was unable to get much chocolate all over my face. Also, I changed my mind about my body.

I also changed my mind about what body part I wanted to dip in chocolate. Since I was going for a more repulsive sensation, I decided to shoot my feet exploring chocolate. I think that this was a much better decision then shooting chocolate pouring down my back, as that could look more sexual than disgusting.

During editing of the video I decided to add in sounds, originally, I didn’t want sound, but here I think layering sound really added to the disgust I was going for. I chose a heartbeat to create the feeling of the body, the sounds of eating a chewy candy and the sound of licking/sucking your fingers. The sounds definitely added to the effect and created a disturbing sense to the video.

This video was really for experimentation, to get me to explore and open up in my typical mediums. Overall, it was a good exercise, but I feel that the video is too overt. My work has a lot to do about subtly creating an emotion, drawing viewers first towards one area and then slowly changing their minds and opinions.

In the end, I like the still images of my feet in chocolate much more than the film. If I continue down this route, I think still images can convey the same sense and be less direct.
