Edgar Orlianeta México City 1972
LE GRAND MORT (La Gran Muerte). 2002. Digital photo-montage for project to be located in the desert near Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua (México) and El Paso, Texas (US). The project was meant to be made with a steel pole and thermoformed plastic sign.
The work is a sign that features the ever-present letter “M” from the McDonald’s fast-food restaurants. The yellow and red colors from the original design were replaced for black, bellow the big “M” you could read the phrase “Come in 2 try”, the sign would have been placed in the dessert near Mexico-US border.
The work was meant to be a sign that reminded us the conflictive and tragic situation happening in these places (Mexico-US border sites)for many decades. It was an ironic but not cynical gesture that expressed the corruption, exploitation and violence happening in these geographically convoluted places.
