sound of underground train from another city as audio integration downtown in Canadian city Client: City of Calgary Development Dept. / Canada Date: 2002

Audio art integration into minor city pedestrian sidewalk downtown Calgary Alberta Canada.

The idea was to construct an architectural pillar out of recycled wooden slats from shipping pallets above an existing heat vent from one of the skyscrapers downtown where lots of people pass by. There would be outdoor speakers mounted inside the pillar that would be recordings of subway trains from other major foreign cities, like London, with the sound of the train pulling in or out. And the announcements at stations like : “ Earl’s Court, mind the gap”. This would jar passers-by into one small moment of imagined travel and transportation to another city.

Unrealized: proposed as an architectural collaboration between colleagues of SturgessArchitecture and artist for City of Calgary. Never saw the light of day…
