Project Title - The Rings –

Intent: To create an iconic and poetic symbol that will represent Lancaster, The Poetry Paths Project and the history, culture and diverse peoples of Lancaster.

Summary: A sculpture of two interlocking ring forms (15’diameter) and two pathways interwoven with words and phrases drawn from poetry written by Lancaster school children that transforms the experience of crossing and observing the semi-circular green in front of the Amtrak Station into a poetic one.

Concept: The quilt is an iconic object that is embedded in the history and consciousness of Lancaster. Inspired by one of the Amish quilt designs our project “The Rings” will reflect the cultural identity of the people and history of this region of Pennsylvania. The Amish “double wedding” ring motif consists of interlocking circular patterns sewn into quilts. We chose this universal design for its symbolic and visual reference to the unbroken circle, an age-old symbol of eternity and suggests a repetitive unbroken wholeness in time and space mirroring the way in which our lives move in repeated and interwoven circles.

Description: The sculpture will consist of two arches that appear to be rings partially buried in a 20 diameter plaza. These will over lap each other at right angles to form an orb-like structure and will be anchored between the crossing paved paths thus providing continued use of the walkway. These arcs will describe a circle 15’ in diameter the bands will be 30”wide and 1/2” thick each end will terminate with a horizontal flat plate 30” wide by 12” that will be anchored to a concrete footer below the paving with stainless steel anchors. Words and phrases from the Children‘s poetry will be cutout of these plates in three languages English, Spanish and German to represent to population of Lancaster. The text will be cut in a variety sizes and placed randomly across the surface of the plates. The paths will be handicap accessible at 5’ wide and aproximately 110’ long the paving (TechnoBloc - Allegro) will alternate their color following the format of the quilt pattern. Inserted within the paved paths will be large granite blocks the width of the path, carved across ther surface will be more words or phrases from the children’s texts. The arcs of the paved paths will cross each within the top half of the semi-circular green at the circular sculpture plaza.
