CORNERHOUSE MICRO COMMISSIONS - (a site specific proposal) 'I gave you this picture because I was afraid you might forget me.'

About your idea: What is your idea? The location – the CORNERHOUSE would provide me with the opportunity to create a short digital film with audio scape to evoke my relationship with my late father – a relationship that was characterised for the most part by his absence. He worked away from home through out my childhood - leaving permanently when I was 12. I hadn’t thought much about this until I saw the Brazilian film CENTRAL STATION in the CORNERHOUSE in 1998. The films closing lines put a different twist on memories, which I thought were locked away and freeze framed but which actually twisted and contorted when given this new sound track. This work called - I gave you this picture because I was afraid you might forget me - could be exhibited online and /or as a site-specific installation in CORNERHOUSE depending on the available resources.

The film would be a single image of someone walking away (most likely along a hospital corridor which is where I last saw him) while the audioscape might evoke my father and the few facts I knew about him so the piece might include the sound of telephones (my father worked in’ telecommunications’), a piece of opera (my father liked ‘The Giigli Concert’), a FIAT 500 engine (my father drove a fiat 500)- At some point the piece might contain some lines from the Walter Salle’s film and some spoken recollections. This is a rough outline. I want to create a work that resonates with the people who see/hear it- like a mourning ritual and if possible, at some point, has an interactive element. I would welcome any input CORNERHOUSE might have in terms of a suitable location or duration for the piece or any other suggestion you might have.

Budget: How would you allocate the £500 Micro Commission budget? To employ performer, sound engineer and camera operator - £300 - To commission musician/sound engineer and purchase sound samples - £200. If the piece is to be exhibited in the Cornerhouse – there could be additional costs for speakers, screen/installation. Everything else equipment, software and sound library I can provide myself.

Timeline: How long do you think it will take you to realise your idea? What are your milestones? Formulating and refining the scope of the piece with CORNERHOUSE, Drafting the concept -2 week Sound Collection/ Filming - 1 week Mixing/editing - 2 weeks Presenting and discussion possible mixes with CORNERHOUSE 1 week

About You: Why should we commission you to realise this idea?

Because my idea has got heart and soul – it is based on a personal experience but it is also a meditation on memory and loss, which is something everyone experiences.. In the context of this proposal it’s significant that the genesis for the work occurred in the CORNERHOUSE. I think the piece has the potential to say something about the power of film to move us. A single moment can evoke a lifetime. Also because I will employ digital media this work has the potential to reach and interact with a wider audience on your website.
