The Unicorn Lake Project for the lake of sculptures of Vassivière island, France July 2009 On the lake of Vassivière

After creating in 2009, in the framework of the exhibition Etc. Balkis Island, The Vassivière Unicorn ("Unicorn Eiffel"), a sculpture that occupies the entire space in front of the Centre international d’art et du paysage, drawn on the ground with a mineral product, the carbonate, and only visible in its totality from the Aldo Rossi’s lighthouse which dominates the island, Yona Friedman had drawn very closely - on the other side of the building - a new silhouette, this one of her very famous dog Balkis (made with Sarrazin seeds) playing at distance with the Unicorn.

Keep developping this bestiary, Yona Friedman had planned to create a work for the lake of Vassivière, a monument to Balkis island: The Unicorn Lake. This sculpture, like The Vassivière Unicorn ("Unicorn Eiffel"), wanted to give the strong signal of a privileged, protected and at the same time enigmatic place.

The reference to the Inca civilization is explicit, Yona Friedman’s imagination is conveyed through the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figuration surrounded by a maze of geometric shapes, as we can still see in the south of the Peru in the highlands of Nazca.

Yona Friedman had also planned to extend his fantastic bestiary in the surroundings fields of Vassivière whose we can find a prefiguration in the movie Voyage en Licornie, 2011 by Jean-Baptiste Decavèle and Yona Friedman.
