“The Saffron Dome” is a project created in 2010 for a sculptural work recalling classical pavilions, made of materials that remind of industrial sheds, surmounted by domes in which it is possible to grow typical aromatic plants of the place where the artwork is hosted. This sculpture is in constant evolution following the seasonal cycle of the plants and also because it is placed in a way that visitors can easily see their roots from the bottom, racalling the conceptual idea of culural roots.

“The Saffron Dome” is a pavilion with a square foundation that is 400 cm tall and 9 mq. This piece is for external spaces: the base - where the girder is placed - is made of steel pylons with iron plates as decorations and loglines for draining. To the pylons are applied and blocked (through specific dockings) some aluminium wands (8mm diameter), on which have been previously placed some decorations (aluminium stencil laser cut recalling liberty style and letters reproducing the title of the work “If Iu Fil Homsik, Tink in Dailect!” – If You Feel Homesick, Think In Dialect!

The aluminium wands dockings are structures that can be easily replaced if they become damaged. The same decoration is applied to the two arch bars on the upper side of the dome, and on the side of the dome’s base. The Dome is a circular flower bed, cut on the upper side, with 5 plexiglass steps which are circular and concentric vases. The basement step has a diemeter of 280 cm, tall 16 cm and deep 14 cm. The total height of the concentric vases is 80 cm. The 5 vases diameter changes 16 cm every time it goes up to its extremity, while the deepness and height of each circular step is unchanged. The plexiglass concentric vases are pierced on the base both to let water out of it after being watered and to make its roots visible from the inside of the dome. In order to lighten the weight, the volume has been mixed with land and clay in which different plants grow weaved through a geo-texture. It is necessary to create a slope under both land and clay in order to permit the water draining. TOT: 400 Basil plants, land 1720 lt, weight 3400 kg.
