Proposal to re-use the dismantled aluminium Olympic Rings that were sited on Box Hill during the cycling road race of London 2012

The forms that resulted from the way the original aluminium Olympic rings had been deconstructed inspired me to design a single sculpture that would be made entirely from sections of circles. In addition to using all of the original pieces of the rings, I propose to construct some new aluminium arc sections of differing radii and to reface all of the pieces, so that each element of the entire sculpture is a rectilinear box in cross section. I have not been able to fully see all of the separate sections of the original rings as they are currently in storage, so I have used the photographs and the plans supplied to try to understand how many sections there are and how their particular forms are shaped.

In my proposal, the disassembled sections are completely reconfigured into a form that evokes the Olympic flame, but that also contains hints and suggestions of the Olympic rings and circular bicycle wheels on an uphill/downhill trajectory. The attached images are merely to give a sense of the initial concept. If this proposal were selected for further development, I would make a fully realised form design along with detailed CAD drawings of all the sections and how they would connect along with details of the foundation and fixings. The final form of the flame would be slightly more complex than displayed in the images of the concept maquette (not submitted).

The final piece would be made entirely in aluminium and finished with a soft finish powder coated lacquer, which would have a lustre effect transition between golden and turquoise colours. There would be matt graphite-coloured supporting fixtures upon a polished concrete hemisphere.

If my proposal were ever produced I would, of course, provide a comprehensive budget along with details of manufacturers, metals, finishes, fixtures, transport and installation.

Ideally, I would like to make a 1:15 scale maquette in metal finished to exactly the same specifications as the final piece, prior to construction. This could serve for consultation and publicity purposes. My preferred site for the final work would be somewhere in the Surrey Hills, although I am aware of potential planning difficulties. During the games and the run up to them, I was particularly inspired by the arrival of the Olympic torch into Guildford along with the fact that the cycling road race passed through some of the most stunning landscapes in the county. I would welcome the opportunity of an interview to discuss my proposal further.
