LISTE ROUGE [MEMORIAL FOR THE DISAPPEARED] is a proposal by spmb for the City of Geneva’s 2011 Neons Competition. Starting from the observation that the Geneva Ecological Region has lost seven flower species to urban development in the past decades, we use this local image of “floral disappearance” as a metaphor for the political disappeared around the world. Each lost Geneva flower species is translated into a geometric shape with their equivalent neon colour. Each neon flower is then multiplied three times to render a spatial aspect to the often-flat neon signs, augmenting the angle of 3-dimensional perception of the artwork from multiple locations. The artwork becomes a remembrance and a reminder of the political/environmental disappeared at the Plaine de Plainpalais.
