The “Mariah Carey Perpetual God Machine Based on Fractal Technology” is an unrealized project consisting of a large upright granite monolith (similar to the mysterious monolith in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey), installed in a remote desert area. Inside the monolith is a solar-powered computer that is perpetually playing the word “God” as sung by Mariah Carey in her song “Thank God I Found You” (from her 1999 album “Rainbow”). The computer is constantly putting the word “God” through a fractal program, which changes the word with each pass, becoming more illegible as time goes on. Since the “Mariah Carey Perpetual God Machine Based on Fractal Technology” is solar-powered and exists in the desert, the idea is that this machine will last as long as it receives sunlight. Theoretically, it may last for the next 4.5 billion years, the estimated remaining life of the Earth before it plunges into the Sun.
