EXCAVATION Unrealized project for the exhibition “Architecture” in Küntlerhaus Bregenz – Austria / 2008

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The project Excavation refers to the roman corpus of finds that were discovered and excavated during the construction of Palais Thurn und Taxis in 1841 in Bregenz, Austria. Excavation focuses on the palace itself and its archeological significance. The project proposes to cover the palace with a protection roof consisting of a scaffolding structure and an orange tarpaulin, which will colour the light coming through the rooflights of the building. The showcase containing the roman finds would be relocated from its current position in the local cultural museum of Vorarlberger Landesmuseum, and exhibited in the cellar of the Palais Thurn und Taxis, thus returning to its find spot.

Mario Asef studied architecture and art in Córdoba (Argentina), Berlin, and London. His work has been exhibited worldwide, most recently at Licht Art Award (Frankfurt am Main 2011) Nouvel Organon (Paris 2011) Kasa Galerie (Istanbul 2010), Abandoned Gallery (Malmö, Sweden 2009) SSamzie Space (Seoul 2009). Recent museum exhibitions include Hamburger Kunsthalle, Villa Merkel, Künstlerhaus Bregenz (Austria), and the Akademie der Künste Berlin. Mario Asef's public interventions, photographs, videos, soundscapes and installations focus on the legibility of urban space and architecture into a specific social- cultural context within a historical moment. Hopping to find a way to explore an intimate social-critical and political aspect of forms, the artist develop a system of telling, in the sense of a thought experiment that aims to produce an unpredictable effect - a moment of logical absurdity - creating a fiction of the real. He is a precise and yet poetic recorder of the fleeting and the mundane. His work emphasise, in an unpretentious and yet precise way, moments of displacement and the disappearance of space and time. In a subversive and humorous way, Mario Asef manages to breach the rules of the every day life. Like a researcher he explores, with the most different mediums, the construct of public spaces and public life.
