(Working) Title: Chinese American Flag Artist: Maarten Daudeij (The Netherlands, Australia) Year of origination of idea: 2011 Concept: To wave a large size flag of which the design is a collage of the Chinese and the American Flag on top of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Theme: Addressing friction between two of the world’s main super-powers and its significance for Australia, in a daunting yet also very simple and light-hearted way. Challenges: To persuade the MCA in Sydney, to produce the flag and to deal with the consequences that might arise on personal, local, societal and global levels. Opportunity: To create a work that is simple, straightforward, dumb yet intelligent, beautiful and possibly very ugly.
