    STATEMENT Liza Eurich / 2011.05.16

My current studio practice in engaged in a critical inquiry that considers how failure might be defined in a capacity that extends beyond its utilization as a category of judgment. Rather, failure functions alternatively as a methodology, in this sense working through failure positions failure as generative. This approach provides an armature for the fabrication of work that resists goal-oriented production and high performance culture, constructing a divergent space open to sideways movements, experimentation and latency.

Working through failure: Contextualized as generative, failure is defined by its correlation to a singular or varied propagation instigated through an initial action. This first action may continue in addition to these supplemental developments, or the shift may take precedence, leaving the original action transformed, modified or discarded in its entirety. This process of production is representative of a transfer to the tangential, where development proceeds in a horizontal rather than vertical direction, functioning as a derivative or offshoot of the original impetus. Subsequently failure becomes a site of experimentation, where intent is delayed and latency foregrounded.

Two from a series of failed drawings covered up in various ways.
