This piece was going to be a continuation of my ‘Living Memorial’ project (2011), which involved people acting as objects within memorial forms. I wanted to stage a commemorative performance in Melbourne, with 300 people dressed in their clothes, floating on their backs in Port Phillip Bay for approximately an hour. I wanted the piece to be eerie and dark in tone. The sinking of the SIEV X in 2001, where over 300 asylum seekers died when their vessel sank going from Indonesia to Christmas Island, provoked the idea.
