AFTER TILTED ARC, 1985 Proposal for Alternative to Existing Federal Plaza, Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York City.

    Dimensions: 55' H x 20' W x 85' D (1676 H x 610 W x 2591 D cm.)

Elements: Waterfall 35' x 20' (1066 x 610 cm.) Raked stage/baffle Golden hoop 14' (427 cm.) Balance beam sliver Glowing projected eclipses Hovering steel disc, copper square Suspended javelin Diaphanous moon sphere Impossible ladder Myriad of cobalt blue fireflies

Materials: Water, Aluminum, Steel, Latex, Motor, Pump, Incandescent light, Copper, Gold.

Comments: "The primary inspiration for this work is the magnificence of the space itself, the grand vaulted granite chambers of the revered Brooklyn Bridge. The vaults inspire awe. ADYTUM is an assemblage of metaphors. The various suspended elements dramatize the space. The grandeur and the depth of the volume are both a metaphor for infinity and for the inner sanctum of the mind. Deep cobalt blue jewels of light adorn this realm. A slender red ladder climbs the unassailable ascent. A floating disc and diamond eclipse the vaulted ceiling. While a huge diaphanous moon leaves no doubt that the work is inspired by the natural world. ADYTUM is a shrine to the concept of infinity.

The work was conceived in and of itself. It also served as a theatrical set for The Creation Company's production of Matthew Maguire's The Memory Theatre of Giulio Camillo. In this play, ADYTUM represents the "Umbra", the realm of infinite shadow which clouds the memory." (KJ-AG)

It is clear the entire plaza does not work. If a remedy is attempted, the entire site must be changed. What is to be done: * Rather than ignore or disregard the given fact of the surrounding architecture, Try to utilize what dynamic aspect the building does have: its shear verticality. The result: Suspend a gilt sphere (20 ft. diameter)from the very top of the structure giving the building a purpose in relation to the plaza. The orb becomes the center of focus for the whole. * Create a plaza surface of bound red cinders in concentric rings. Like a pebble dropped in water. The height increases towards the center (0 to 36 inches) providing seating removed from heavy plaza foot traffic, an inner sanctum. The concentric rises dictate the arc of topiary bushes. Trees and huge soaring flag poles on the axis, Further emphasize the verticality of the space and celebrate the moving air above. * To animate the plaza with an ever changing wondrous substance that would prevent federal workers and the public from ever seeing the plaza quite the same way twice. Result: Steam flows from the inverted domed sky in the center and from geyser-field like fumaroles randomly scattered across the cinder plaza. Each concentric ring is drained so that rain run-off is brought in contact with a series of Con Ed superheated steam lines which abound in the area summer and winter. This run-off water vaporizes and supplies the vents. The amount would be always in flux. Surplus steam could also be released into the system. Surface wind will cause the steam spouts to dance. * A brass line tracing the position of Richard Serra's "Tilted Arc" is laid into the macadam as a memorial. (KJ-AG)

    Scale of Model: 3/32 = 1foot.
