“Oil spill La Fenice” by KilMor Prod. La Fenice

Teatro La Fenice is the biggest opera house in Venice, Italy and one of the most famous theatres in Europe. “La Fenice” means “The Phoenix”. A phoenix is a mythical bird that is a fire spirit with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet. It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The Phoenix's ability to be reborn from its own ashes implies that it is immortal, though in some stories the new Phoenix is merely the offspring of the older one. In very few stories they are able to change into people. (paraphrasing Wikipedia)

    The oilspillbird

In 2010 the art-activism-group KilMor Prod. was invited to the German town Kleve to do an art project. It was the time of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry that caused extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats and to the Gulf's fishing. In Kleve the town’s landmark is the swan of the Lohengrin myth. In the city there is the Swan Castle and in the pedestrian area there is also a huge fountain, with an oversized swan, pulling Lohengrin away from his family. KilMor Prod. transformed in summer for 1 month this swan into a swan right out of an terrible oil spill.

    Oil spill La Fenice

KilMor Prod. believes, that there will always be oil spills. The companies will always try to maximize their profit and that means on the other hand often to minimize the safety regulations. At the same time, the whole industrial world and its consumers are all part of the problem, because we want to get the cheapest fuel, plastic bottles etc. To indicate this fact, and to indicate, that oil spills will happen over and over again (as long as we are not changing our thinking) KilMor Prod. wants to oil-spill the golden phoenix of the gates of teatro La Fenice.

    KilMor Prod.

KilMor Prod. is Lucia Morandini and Karl Kilian, an art-activists-duo that works mostly in a social-political-discursive context.
