The World Exhibition – A project by Karl Kilian General information

The first time there will be an exhibition all over the world. The project combines the internet and the real world, space and place, the artworld and the world population. For this matter the project is using technologies like Google Earth. For “The World Exhibition” there will be an international open call for projects. Like the Nazca Lines, a series of geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert, the artists will produce huge emblematic pictures on the earth’s surface. Some of them won’t be recognized as coherent figures except from the bird’s eye view respective via Google Earth (or a similar cooperation-partner, e.g. the military of the USA). But via the internet everybody with a web access can watch the exhibition. The project will cooperate with NGO’s like WWF, greenpeace, The Big Brother Awards etc.

    The procedure

Step 1 – The open call There will be an open call of Karl Kilian for art projects for any open place/ public space worldwide. The call will be spread via art communities, social networks and word of mouth. Every artist of this planet can participate and show his/her art to the world. There is only one restriction: People can only submit works that can be seen via a technology like Google Earth.

Step 2 – The opening The audience will get the coordinates of the worldwide art-sights at the official opening day, in order to visit them on their own computers. The coordinates of the different art-sights will all be announced on the webside www.karlkilian.com/theworldexhibition. The exhibition will run as long, as there are still some works existing.

The project & the risks of such technologies

Karl Kilian, organising & curating “The World Exhibition”, already started to search for adequate projects. There will be a collaboration with Google Earth (or a similar cooperation-partner), but at the same time Karl Kilian wants to show the risks of such technologies. For this reason Kilian designed for „The World Exhibition“-series the work „Total Surveillance“. With this work he wants to question the possible abuse of these technologies and the privacy protection. Through this consideration the idea of „The World Exhibition“ was born. Karl Kilian tries to unite different NGO’s and artists, because he wants to use this opportunity to show important matters in a simple, but not accusing way (e.g. a huge polar bear-pictogram in the arctic ice as cooperation with the WWF).
