Arist Book Proposal by Karen Hibbard, Women’s Studio Workshop, 2011. The title merges the words ‘audio’ and ‘labia’. Audio is any refers to any representation of sound. Labium (plural labia) is a Latin‐derived term meaning "Lip".The labia are anatomical structures that are part of the female genitalia; they are the major externally visible portions of the vulva. I wanted to root this project in the female body because of its significance to a feminist organization such as WSW as well as to myself. The images refer to labyrinths, topographical maps, landscape, and the body. An emphasis is made to connect to shapes and patterns reminiscent of the human ear and lips‐ where sound is heard and comes from respectively. It is a visualization of the journey of sound from origin to source. In today’s world of anxiety and boredom, a silent journey to the labyrinth’s centre allows the walker to shed all superfluous dialogue and reflect. I invite the reader/listener to experience the creative landscape that is the Women’s Studio Workshop. The soundscape elements intermingle to generate a precarious sense of place and time by shifting locational identities. The viewer/listener experiences the actual sound walk as it happened on that particular day. *Please note: this publication includes a cd‐rom.
