Justyna Gruszczyk RETURN Project consists on scenting former Lutheran church in Toruń with the incense, which is used by Orthodox Church. Interior of the church will remain empty. In a visual way nothing will change. The source of the fragrance will be hidden – it will make an impression, that the church itself exudes the smell. Project refers to the past of the building, which was built by Lutherans, and between the World Wars belonged to the Orthodox Church. Now it belongs to Tumult Foundation and it is used as an art gallery and a cinema, or rented for events. In the project, an empty interior will refer to the emptiness of lutheran architecture, but the smell fills the building from the bottom to the top, which is connected with orthodox aesthetics – plentiness of pieces of art, churches filled with icons. The two aesthetics, outwardly incompatible, will merge and emphasize their meaning. Created as a church, now accidentally rented for events such as girls fighting in jelly, the building became bone of contention for the citizens of the city.
