Address to the Art World 2000

"Art has been defined over and over as man's highest spiritual expression, and in one respect superior to religion in that it is the only activity that does not lead to killing; it is in fact the redeemer of an otherwise evil affliction, human life." Jacques Barzun: From Dawn to Decadence

"Art has been defined over and over as man's highest spiritual expression, and in one respect superior to religion in that it is the only act

I feel that is is my duty and my responsibility as an artist to point out the troubles of society even though it is a great burden for me to write as I am a visual artist plus foreign born. I feel that if I don't share my insights I will not be able to live with myself. We are all familiar with this creative process. You visualise something and you have to do it no matter what. And this is the logic that I followed.

Artists have the most creative freedom and power in the world.

We must take advantage of this and take responsibility because our troubled society needs us. Imagine, our conceptual art would focus on the problems one by one, as long as it takes. Involve the whole country at the same time, it is evidence that in crisis the country can work together, stand united, everybody focused, helping to solve the problems.

We have to initiate by calling the nation through the media to end hunger and homelessness in the United States of America.

We have to ensure that education will include the arts, all the arts: music, dance, theatre, visual arts and all the sports. These subjects should be part of the curriculum and taught by professionals in every elementary school in America. Studying these subjects would occupy their intellect, especially those who come from broken, dysfunctional families. The emotionally neglected teens will no tend up in gangs without direction, without beliefs and without hope. We, our society, has failed to show them the way.

I don't think the politicians and the public understand and realize the importance and impact of art education which is the mirror of life.

We have to educate and develop a symbiotic relationship with the public about what the living artist is doing today and why they call it art. The arts must survive in the future. We hold the key, we are the chosen ones for this century to present the arts not just for a small percentage of the population, but for everyone.

Since creativity and expression are innate, everybody has the need to express themselves one way or another, it is human nature. The repercussions will be positives and we, society, don't have to live in fear that we will be the next victim of crime.

We have to prevent the politicians and the administrators from cutting the development of human nature, cutting the arts for children, because our society will pay a much higher price later. They will express themselves through criminal activities. Politicians support the arts only "when they want to tranquilise the unruly in prisons and asylums" Jacques Barzun: From Dawn to Decadence. When it is too late!!

Not just for our sake but for the sake of the next generation who have chained themselves to the computer games and just maybe will never paint a picture or play the piano again unless it is in virtual reality. Therefore, future generations will lose the so-called "experience" and I am not just talking about visual arts but all of the arts; the live experience where spirituality and the feeling of belonging and inspiration occurs.

And in the near future in the public eye artists would not be useless, immoral, parasites of society, allowed to create sacreligeous art. For the public, the art world's reputation is "stained" and they will not support us as much as they should/can/could. Until we, the artists and the art world take responsibility for our actions and reverse this view to benefit the world.

I am proposing to the art world and the artist to consider to: • I. Declare and announce the new directions - through the most powerful media, television, newspapers and the Internet. • II. Take leadership in education and shaping our society - the best religion if it is not decadent. • III. Merge or collaborate with the media and other art, like music, dance, theater more than ever, so we will be increasingly accessible and affordable for the public. • IV. Through education, narrow the gap between the living artists and the public. The artists' livelihood depends on it! Since I am a visual and conceptual artist, I envision that this article will appear on the front page of the New York, Los Angeles and the San Francisco newspapers.
