The War Of The Worlds (South Africa)
I have been developing the following unrealised project: to create a radio announcement that takes Orson Welles’s infamous 1938 broadcast, “The War Of The Worlds,” as a starting point, re-imagining the concept for contemporary South Africa. With radio the biggest information source in the country, and no existing culture of self-reflexive radio art and critique, this science-fiction would very possibly activate some of the traditional myths, become enflamed by existing xenophobic tensions and prompt confused action against another other. The work would have dire social and political consequences, and as such should not be made manifest.
