JARDIN COTONCO
‘Jardin Cotonco’ is a local recreational park in the Waterwijk district in Ghent- Belgium. It aspires to be a pedagogical garden/green area in the historical centre of the city of Ghent, a laboratory and extension to MIAT (Museum of Industrial Archeology and Textiles). ‘Jardin Cotonco’ is an exchange platform to develop a garden with textile plants and plants used for coloring textiles. The platform is a re-orientation of the cultural heritage trough an exchange of the manufacturing of textiles.
What is Cotonco? Cotonco stands for Compagnie Congolaise Cotonniers. It was the most important cotton company of Belgian Congo established and managed mainly by textile industrialists from Union Cotonniers (UCO) from Ghent. Jardin Cotonco is set up as a public garden embedded in the history of the neighborhood to identify the rich history of the textile industry.
Description of the proposal The park will retains its existing design and functions The relation with the border of the water is enhanced by a jetty and platform connected with the green shore. The deck is accessible from the water; it’s a mental and physical landing, entrance. The port of the entrance has ornamental fencing with the words ‘Jardin Cotonco’. Around the platform a wild green area of cotton plants, hemp and flax overlaps each other. It will develop and grow towards a free zone of textile plants competing with local wild herbs and ‘native’ weeds
In collaboration with MIAT the artist will develop an edition of printed matter wich unveils the museums archive and wich is distributed at the neighborhood. The edition is also a pedagogical tool for the museums education department and communicates about Jardin Cotonco.
