    Reason

Reason is a 1994 unrealized project. Try to relate Art, Enlightenment, the development class city, urban geography, class struggle, the theory of numbers and metals

The purpose of this project was to emplace six rectangular prism pieces, at their given location specified on the North-South coordinates traced in red over the two maps of Madrid . There are six emplacements, separated from each other either from a distance of 1 meter, 10 meters, 100 meters, 1.000 meters and 10.000 meters.

As well as the spatially sequenced display, the material volume of the pieces is set to increase over a basis of 10 the cm3. The first emplacement would correspond to the smallest one inside the gallery and made of platinum and iridium. The second is placed over the gallery's imaginary line traced over the map at a distance of one meter. The second prism would have been made of gold. The third silver, the fourth copper, the fifth lead and the sixth steel. By this procedure the gallery will necessarily have to establish a different way to deal with the city.

Emplacement 6th corresponds to the Southeast position, it is separated from position 5th by 10.000 m. which is 10 km. and from the 1st piece, the North opposite edge 10.000 + 1.000 + 100 + 10 + 1m. = 11.111 m. it would have been made of steel and its weight should be of 100.000 kg.

“Raison” becomes a device that continually enables the visitor to make very long lists of relations among the elements that the project attempts to deal with. But those belong either to the urban-fabric axis or the metrical-ordination axis. The real and the ideal that align and converge.

REASON The project that we hereby aim to describe, broaches the subject of the City. This central matter also provides the theoretical basis and enables the possibility to undertake an unusual approach, as it is conducted from the art field, but also pays especial attention to its social implications. Nowadays, with an evident lack of channels to involve citizenship in any type of decision-making process concerning the city, we intend to bring back some awareness on this topic.

The City as well as the State governed by Law (the rule of law) exists as an ideal as well as a real since the Early Middle Ages onwards to the present time. A device for the display of demarcations, impronted on people's life. A urban fabric, and a juridical ordination, these two being, either: a set of parallel axis, that serve as a tool for ideologization, or otherwise: they might also converge into their anti-paradigm, which would be disorder.

The purpose of the project is to explore the notion of North-South axis as the physical support for citizenship (where the North-South is the real and citizenship an ideal) a similar entity should be given in order to display the material plasticity of that which is an ideal disfunction.

    INMATERIAL BASIS

REASON: Since late XVI Century upwards to the present days different cultural traditions have broached Reason as their focusing paradigm, suited to solve almost any human concern by rational thought . From Spinoza to the postsartreans Reason was the medium for hope, and outside of it there is no possible order, no chance for any other system of ideas to be displayed. So Illustration is approached as a container subject and foundation for other movements such as functionalism.

CITY: Madrid, my city. Or any other city. So the city becomes an agency of territorial discontinuity. The city as a stage where all those great dichotomies of our time are displayed, which is the same place where the social is performed as a conflict. The city allows everything to get mixed up, even opposite interests a place broken up into pieces, resuming as the dream's inhibiter.

ART GALLERY: It is a place to buy and sell art's master pieces.

    MATERIAL BASIS

MONUMENTS: An obelisk, statue, building, etc, erected in commemoration of a person or event or in celebration of something. A notable building or site, esp. one preserved as public property. A tomb or tombstone

North-South: The convention applied in most maps or systems is to locate the North upside and the South below.

The metric system: The metric system (DMS) is an international decimalised system of measurement that was originally based on the metre des archives and the kilogramme des archives introduced by France in 1799. Over the years, the definitions of the metre and kilogram have been refined and the metric system extended to incorporate many more units. Although a number of variants of the metric system emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the term is now often used as a synonym for the "International System of Units" - the official system of measurement in almost every country in the world.
