PROPOSAL FOR SITE SPECIFIC LIGHT INSTALLATION FOR S-BAHN BRIDGES BERLIN

    Title: Good Vibrations

Concept: moving illumination on underside of U-Bahn bridges by passing train.

Method: by placing small units consisting of simple electronics and a piezo vibration sensor at regular intervals between selected U-Bahn stations. Units will be attached to structure by powerful magnets.

Vibration sensor turns on light source when train passes overhead .

    Installation variations :

there are 2 possible methods to realize this installation

1 using standard electrical 220v supply powering the sensor units and light sources.

1 harvesting the solar, wind & vibration energy to charge batteries. Harvested energy is then used to power superbright LED light source. This would be a self contained system.

                        2

Method 1 is relatively low cost, ready to go using standard & easily obtainable parts .

Method 2 is technically more complex involving research and development phase.

Due to the difficulty in getting this project realised due to sceptical authorities I decided to make up some units and install temporarily in a guerrilla action. Though only 1w LEDs were used this proof of concept action was successful. Much brighter light source would be needed for actual project.

Cost depends on length of installation, how many Km, and therefore how many units to be installed. For method 1 cost per unit is between 30/50 euros maximum. Permission will be needed from BVG and co-operation from electrical technicians. Light source will be kept low about 40w so as not too interfere with traffic conditions. For method 2 price will be higher due to its unique nature and therefore an R&D phase. carlo crovato
