democraticrain.net is based on the idea of giving a “printed voice” to people in a concrete context on the interface between inside > < outside and the individual > < collective. it allows to create and send black and white A4-statements or -images to one of the four public printers and let it “rain”. the same time the rain gets archived in the site where it was composed and becomes free to be extended and send forward. a special “they-rule-mailing list” allows to make specific forwards. a webcam allows to see the highlighted rains. on the plan above we simulate that on the facade of the Circulo de Bellas Artes of Madrid - an “inside” of tradition and exclusion (”circulo”) and an outside of an always moving city and an evolving self-conception of inside > < outside and the individual > < collective. democratic rain also works the other way around - in entrance halls, etc. its contextualisation and invitation to rainmakers decides about the basic elements of its installation (how printers get installed, how the www is communicated and the hierarchy of the “they-rule-list”)

the project was “done” by c a l c. c a l c = Teresa Alonso Novo / Dani Gomez Blasco / omi (Thomas Scheiderbauer) and Malex Spiegel, an art-collective since 1992. for more info on c a l c please visit: www.calcaxy.com/works
