Building Of An Heterogeneous Space Of The Disappearance will be an ephemeral construction shaped as one of the present balconies in what it used to be the Gebäude Des Reichsstatthalters Und Der Gauleitung.

This proposal pretends to make an historical parallel between the present and the past of the square, now voided by the new use of the Shopping Centre. This stone-printed perforated tarpaulin scaffolding structure will be located on the eastern-square green meadow over the parking platform. It will have stairs to reach the four balconies it will have. On each balcony (facing correspondingly each of the buildings of the square), there will be a microphone and amplifiers, and on top of each balcony, a Perimeter LED display broadcasting live the consumerism of the new Shopping Centre. These surveillance videos will activate a Bell sound every time a videotaped product disappears.

Some video examples are: - The video tapes a Milk Carton, when removed, bell will sound. - The video tapes Movie spectators in the cinema, when they leave, Bell will sound. - The video tapes the Bowling game, when there is a Strike, Bell will sound. - The video tapes a couple sitting in a table having coffee, when they leave, Bell will sound And so on…

I would like to highlight that it will be important to make people to be comfortable about occupying or playing with this space. In order to do that, I would suggest the Shopping Centre to invite people via newspaper ads or inside the Mall by propaganda handouts, in order to encourage regular activities while this ephemeral space exists (I strongly suggest to do it in Summer). It could be a “sing your truth” activity, or could set up for a concert for new young local bands by invitation or contest. When there is no activity scheduled it can be used by anybody giving voice to whoever wants to.

It is of my interest to develop in this proposal the contravention of three historical paradigms according to Miwon Kwon’s studies regarding public art: The Sculptural, the public experience with the site specific and the Social, Cultural and Political dimension in collaboration with the community.

By making this spectacular structure, I would like to enable dialectics between these paradigms and also criticize (Building of a Heterogeneous Space of the Disappearance) the relationships between historical decisions over the Gauforum construction, the Shopping Centre and the possible restrictions that may arise in the proposal development. This could provide a benchmark on such a public intervention and create an archive of possibles and impossibles: almost like the having the control of the public art proposal.

May this proposal be executed, I would need not only technical expertise at my disposition, but also a group of student assistants or fellow Master students to reflect on, to archive and to do strong fieldwork on all the outcomes this proposal might have.
