Project to next Documenta-Kassel, at the moment nobody have contact me. It's on the utopia of the cohabitation by Franco Rotelli, historic successor by Franco Basaglia father of the psychiatric revolution

Beauty is a need, the ugliness makes it ugly.

The project PA(E/S)SAGGIO born on the third utopia links to the park of S. Giovanni, Trieste which is the utopia of the cohabitation by Franco Rotelli.

First Utopia: the utopia of positivism. At the end of the 19th century the municipality of Trieste approved the purchase of land considered suitable for the construction of a mental hospital: the park of S. Giovanni, which responded to doctor's F. Veronese indication "free position, sunny and breezy, with pleasant views of distant, muffled in a valley not wet, but not on top of hills too battered by the bora (strong local wind), a plague on a pleasant fertile ground where could grow a luxuriant vegetation, the alienated needs of happy and nice impressions and pleasant land that generously rewards the work that dedicated". On 4th November 1908 the "magnificent civic lunatic asylum of Trieste" designed by Lodovico Braidotti was inaugurated, "great and innovative" reciting admired the documents of the time.

Second Utopia: the utopia of reality. Thirty years ago the psychiatric revolution led by Franco Basaglia, starting from the area of Trieste, became Law 180, 13rd May 1978, destined to change radically the way of considering and addressing the mental suffering. In the decade following the radical psychiatric reform led to the opening of the madhouse and the abandonment of many buildings.

The abandonment of the area has long been fueled by ancient prejudices and mistrust confused. For years, in the collective imagination, the park of S. Giovanni is dark, scary, devoid of landmarks, interspersed with buildings grim abandoned buildings.

Third utopia: the utopia of cohabitation. "Historic" successor by Franco Basaglia, Franco Rotelli says "... we must find practicals, languages, mediations, awards, staged, affections, which are the very meaning of a production collective of work, the place of dialogue..." and he was able to create unimaginable synergies between public and private, and university, co-owners of the place, adding to his faith in the de-institutionalization of the mentally ill also a skills organizational to create a new space mental and real. Thus, it has long been an important process started with an attention to redevelopment of the "culture house" in the recovery and restoration of buildings and, correspondingly, the layout of the park with the culmination project "l'officina delle Rose" and the birth of a rose garden or 5000 roses opened 3rd October, 2009.

The project PA(E/S)SAGGIO expands mainly on two levels of interpretation contained in the name: Il PAESAGGIO/landscape is the subject with color photos of the park roses alternating black and white photos with the individual parts of the park still abandoned. They create a background and, to increase the sense of before and after, the state of abandonment without hope and rebirth, under the photo there will be containers of thick glass, fill ground and roots to recall the Mother Earth, for the photo with roses, ash and refuse to highlight what remains after a disaster for the black and white photo.

The PASSAGGIO/passage will be made with doors put in opposition: doors of bars from the "lunatic asylum" and other old in wood. The doors are still open, but the visitor can choose which port to open: in any case, in the collective, the presence of a door behind the EXISTING of a threshold, a wall, one here and one of there. In this case the four gates surround an interior space that is a metaphor for the ego of man: he is in will allow the doors are open or opening. and then we have communication and membership is closed or will, on both sides of that second, to search for possible new keys or interpretation is the extreme case as an extreme mental illness, are permanently closed and it becomes difficult to share.

Further contribution the passage of an experience increased in the social to the artistic and it's exactly the action that give body at the thought of Franco Rotelli: "Implementing change means to communicate, transmit, deliver in to the world. And if "freedom is therapeutic" as 35 years ago was written on the walls of the asylum in Trieste, the same therapeutic is the communication of freedom".
