The sign that would attract people to an empty area.

For the show When Attitudes Become Form Become Attitudes at Wattis Institute in San Francisco this year I wanted to place an illuminated sign in the vast empty lot just behind the institution, a location as much visible from outside the show as inside. The area is a huge fenced “no man’s land” where you see the highways and the skyline of SF in the background. Along the fence, homeless people are trying to live some kind of life constantly harassed by the police. The lot belongs to the California College of Art and the administration gave permission but changed their mind, not wanting to “set precedent for people using that space”. I guess they feared the sign would attract all kinds of people like homeless and art students.
