Subway Turnstile Sounds - Sasha Sumner © 2011 Imagine paying/swiping your subway card, and instead of hearing the generic beep of the NYC subway turnstile, you hear a strange or beautiful or fun sound. In a row of turnstiles, as more people go through, the sound story expands, the plot thickens, or the music becomes a minor chord or a major chord, a new or familiar thought. This project could be realized in any city.
Subway stop near Wall St.: Adding machines, old cash register ring, the stock exchange bell etc.
Subway stop near the Museum of Natural History: Sounds of animals.
Subway near the U.N. (new 2nd Ave. line) Different languages saying "Pleasant Journey" or "Happy Travels" or "Hello" or "Welcome to New York"
Subways/Trains going to/from NJ: Each turnstile has one note from the opening phrase of "New York, New York" a la Frank Sinatra whose birthplace is NJ.
Random subway: Different tones which make up chords when played together and melody when played individually. A few people pass through sounding a simple melody, but chord variations are 'played' as many people pass through simultaneously.
Random subway: In a row of turnstiles, each one has a different word or phrase which suggests a story as people pass through in various combinations. Ex: "I", "Love", "You", "Don't", "Hate", "Me".
Random subway: Different types of laughs.
Another aspect can be added to this project- When you don't have enough money on your card or it's invalid, you hear the sound of a cry, but if you it's working you hear the laugh. Or maybe it's just a maniacal laugh which turns funny. Or, maybe you hear the sound of thunder or rain which turns to crickets or running water when you're golden.
