    Evidence of Difference

criteria: must take one photograph every day of 2011 that will represent evidence of my difference
work must answer the question, “what makes me different? what am I doing today that is different than everyone else? what sets me apart? how do I contribute to difference in the world?”
do or see or think or create or live

ideas: exhibition – 8 x 10 photos. http://www.fotki.com/us/en/ print for $1.99 each print and frame in batches, like once a month, so it’s not too expensive to do all at once

if it’s something profound I think, then just write it down with a black marker on a piece of paper and take a photo of it. put all the photos into a book and sell it w/the exhibition

I’ve wanted to do a “once a day for a year” post for about 3 years now, but never thought of a concept original or interesting enough to commit to it. So as the New Year was coming up, I asked myself, what do I do every day that is different from everybody else? This was a hard question to answer, and I had a moment of panic – Oh shit! Am I just normal?! (Being normal has been a fear of mine since I was a young child. My husband tells me I have nothing to worry about). My 365 theme would have to be something that sets me apart (which begged the question, what does set me apart?). But I think the Evidence of Difference concept had been somewhere deep in my brain stewing for awhile now, and 2011 must be the right year to follow through with it.

Every day I do or see or think or create something that only I could. We all do, even if we don’t realize it. The Evidence of Difference series will document how I create, live, and see the world in my own light – how I contribute difference to the world. Being normal is scary. This will be proof that I’m not. After the year is up and the blog posts done, I want to translate this series into a physical exhibition and book as well.

on the blog: at the bottom of each Evidence of Difference post, write:
Evidence of Difference is a series of 365 daily posts about what I do or see or think or create every day of 2011 that contributes to difference in this world. Being normal is scary. This is proof that I’m not. Visit the Evidence of Difference category to see all posts. And go to my portfolio website for a complete artist statement and more info on the series. (leave the last bit out until I get the work up on my portfolio site)

update portfolio website with the evidence of difference series
state that it’s available for exhibition in 2012.

At about the 6 month mark, start marketing the series for 2012 exhibitions. Make a PDF file to email to prospective galleries, or if that doesn’t work print the PDF file out and send to galleries (if it’s a really good gallery, print out an 8x10 example and send to them w/the presentation, will make a good impression).

artist statement: This concept started out as a desire to create a daily post on my blog Visual Influence, a “once a day for a year” post if you will. This has been done so much in the blogosphere that my challenge was to create an original idea for the 365 theme. From the beginning, I wanted to do a series that would translate from my blog to a physical gallery exhibition.
