I never received any reply to my mail and therefore the project is in hybernation mode for now.
Dear Professors, I read about the 2 jordanian bedouin illiterate women who were sent to India for 6 month to train as Solar engineers . Something similar is taking place in Bangladesh. And the guy behind the bangladesh initiative is the Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus , which tells me such a project is a credible feasible idea. I am an artist and an AUB graduate. I am thinking of a project proposal for the Abraaj Capital Art Prize where Art and Science go hand in hand for a better world. The proposal involves AUB students to be sent on site to a poor remote village in Lebanon, to train locals to install, use and maintain solar panels. Abraaj Capital Art Prize allocates $120,000 to each winning artist. Having already an HD sony video cam (1920x1080), and the required software for movie editing, I don't have any production cost. I will just need to cover out a fixed fee for catalogue production & a curatorial fee for an appointed curator, details of both to be decided by the Organisers as stated on page: http://www.abraajcapitalartprize.com/artists-guidelines.php I am still waiting for them to come back to me with an approximate figure. Installation cost of art show should be insignificant as i will require just a projection screen which I am sure they should have . So basically the bulk of the budget would be under your disposal to spend. AUB will be in charge of choosing and buying appropriate panels, choosing the village, and being in charge of student's logistics and training . Project duration October 2011 – March 2012 Due date for the proposal submission is 30th April. I really hope I will hear from you before and please excuse the last minute thing. I just read the articles yesterday. The project would help the environment (on a very minimal level I admit), it will lower the villager's cost of living, and empower them with new skills that they can pass to future generations. Most of all it would hopefully start a new eco trend and spread in other villages. Below are the 2 inspiring stories that motivated the idea: Jordan : http://www.greenprophet.com/2011/03/bedouin-women-solar-power/ Bangladesh: http://edition.cnn.com/2011/BUSINESS/04/11/bangladesh.solar.power.kalihati/index.html?hpt=Sbin More on Abraaj Capital Art Prize at:http://www.abraajcapitalartprize.com/
