This is a work that emphasizes on telling the life story of an Iranian woman through the use of the Chador, which is a traditional islamic covering.

Proposal Title:A kiss on Leyli's navel.(The birth, life and death of an Iranian woman) I would like to emphasize on the effects and everlasting meanings that the Chador ( Islamic cover for women) imposes on our lives as Iranian women. From birth till death we are covered by some form of the Chador or fabrics that resemble it in form and color. We are wrapped in a white cloth called Ghondagh at birth,At 9 ( the age we are considered women in Islam) we receive a colored Chador for our Holy prayers,We also have a black Chador for when we go out.We wear a beautiful chador in front of suitors that emphasizes our beauty and pureness. When we get married we receive a white Chador as a bride and a black one for visiting relatives or attending mourning ceremonies and wakes, also a colourful Chador for when we have guests and another one in our dowry for prayer .And when we pass on our entire bodies are covered by another white fabric called Kafan and then we are to be put in the grave Hence the old Iranian proverb that women use:" I came with a white chador and I'm leaving in a white Kafan. " Meaning they will never leave their husbands and married life till death whatever hardships they endure. I have always felt that the chador represents so much more than just a religious covering .It depicts different stages in Iranian women's lives and by looking at a woman in a chador you can guess a lot about her age, social status, even where she might be going to. This work is a tribute to the everyday life of every Iranian woman. The different stages of her life will be shown by different chador fabrics except birth and death that have Ghondagh and Kafan Fabrics. It consists of ten 2mx2m square frames covered by these fabrics according to the stage of Leyli's life .They will be presented beside each other so they form a horizontal line each placed within 1m of the next. They will tell the story of Leyli. Her birth, marriage and death will be represented with white ghondagh, chador and kafan fabrics. This colour represents the beginning ,middle and end. Nine nine squares are named and place the following order: . The birth of Leyli . Leyli's first Namaz(holy prayer)with her mother Leyli holding her mother's hand as she crosses the street Leyli blushes in front of her suitor . The marriage of Leyli . Leyli on her way to visit her mother- in-law . Leyli holding her child . Leyli mourning her grandmother . The death of Leyli The tenth square is covered by white fabric and will act as a screen.A video projection will be displayed upon it .The video consists of the faces of various Iranian women of different ages and social statuses in chador ,slowly changing into one another, then faster ,until a blurry vision of all the faces remains. Thus depicting the general shape of the Iranian woman's features. This square is named Leyli and will be placed last of all. As is known Leyli is the name the heroine in the beloved tale of Leyli va majnoon. The title A kiss on Leyli's navel (The birth, life and death of an Iranian woman) is a gentle embrace and gesture of compassion for the life endured by the Leylis of yesterday ,today and tomorrow. Muses hidden under veils.
