"Arachne" 2001-present 50 x 11 x 60 inches Bull penis, Ingas wood, fulgurite, titanium, aluminum, brass, enamels, and artist's hair

"Arachne" is an allegorical portrait of the intense struggle between pride and humility, courage and fear, that nearly paralyzed me after deciding to become an artist at the age of six. Jealousy freed me from this long pupal stage, and I was reminded of the ancient myth as a warning against hybris. The sculpture takes the form of a great spinning wheel and presents a series of contrasts (i.e., hand/machine, realistic/abstract, organic/inorganic) that relate the human and divine creative powers to each other. It has taken me ten years to acquire the materials, tools, and skills necessary to make it, and I have every intention of finishing it.
