DEAR is a salutation to strangers and intimates alike. The word began all written communication in English at one time. Now that friendly discourse travels electronically, the word DEAR is reserved for formal notices we should probably worry about. DEAR can mean we value something highly. A DEAR JOHN, however, is a letter that turns a lover into a stranger. DEAR EARTH on a construction fence suggests the complex reasons we hide the land behind it.
