A project of painting television static on a series of free standing billboards along an expressway.

    TITLE: Static BillBoards

OVERVIEW: Having worked as a large-‐ scale public muralist and a fine artist for years, I propose to paint a large-‐ scale image of television screen static on an outdoor billboard or series of billboards. The concept of static to me is important as it is a frequency interference among channels-‐ a ‘between’ space. A part of this interference is caused by the CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background,), which is theorized to be the echo of the Big Bang. This static, often considered an annoyance by many, makes visible one of our generation’s most important theories; the origins of the universe. I find this chaotic field of information visually striking and intellectually thought provoking. Unused advertising billboards, with their affinity to television, seem like an appropriate larger-‐ than-‐ life venue for this concept. I am particularly interested in presenting artwork in unexpected settings.

LOCATION: A free standing billboard with lighting along one of NYC major through fares.

DESIGN: The image of static is from photographs I have taken of the television screen. It will be faithfully reproduced in a black and white palette of color with subtle nuances of cyans and violetes.

MATERIALS: This project will be hand drawn and painted with acrylic on parachute cloth in studio and then temporarily installed. The acrylic paint is Nova Color, a paint made exclusively for exterior mural painting. It offers rich color and durability to the elements. Parachute Cloth is a non-‐ woven polyester that will be primed and painted. It is chosen for its flexibility and durability.

    BUDGET: To be determined.
