Minnie Mouse and Why is she depressed?
Proposal for performance/installation
Disney's land is everywhere, from Bangkok to Broadway, and in every medium. It would be hard to find anyone on the planet who is not aware of something that Disney has produced since Mickey Mouse first spoke in 1928. For the majority of the population, some Disney production or product was part of their childhood and adult memories. Disneyland is the number one honeymoon destination spot. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and other characters are part of the culture and vocabulary. A common expression is that something is "Mickey Mouse." Since Pop Art, Mickey Mouse and the other characters have been an important source of material for artists. But, the name "Mickey Mouse" has been adopted by people in all fields. It is the name of a malignant tumor, a type of ovarian cancer. It has also been used by computer scientists. The "mouse" is the name of the hand held tractor ball and the unit of measurement of that mouse on the screen is known as a "mickey." There are many such references to Mickey. I could find only one reference to Minnie. It was a work on depression and Minnie that was written in Spanish.
Minnie and Mickey both have houses side by side in Toontown a part of Disneyland in southern California. Minnie’s house at Disneyland: It has a kitchen and a makeup table. She is on a diet. She has no awards. She has a wishing well. Mickey is coming for dinner. Mickey is making a movie, has a car, awards and a college degree. Mickey is very successful.
Installation-Performance:
Skewed photos of Minnie house and Mickey's in the darkened background. The performance is a transformation of Mickey into Minnie. Without words and then a monologue for Minnie and then back to Mickey. Fade out.
There will be two chairs next to the small table. On one chair will a " Minnie" shirt, pearls, hair bow and eye lashes. On the floor next to the chair will be a pair of "Minnie" shoes.
