Proposal: Inside Standing/Conversations with the Guardians of Art

Proposed to the Tate Modern, sent to Ben B. I meet and discussed this and screening of Critical Conversations in a Limo.

Guardians of Art

Museum guards are the human face and connection with our art in our museum. New York City museums are some of the best in the world. People from all over the world are drawn to New York because culture. They’re there when for the gala opening, the special event and every day. The spend more time looking at the art than any other group. The art education departments gives them a talk lecture before every exhibition. Some are very interested in art and other art not. Many are artists and some are not.

Project to make video of the people who work as guards in New York City museums. I want to have the guards in conversations in space with champagne. I want them to have a cocktail party, several cocktail parties. The groups would be about 8-10. I have made contact and talked to several people who are museum guards about this project. I have asked museum directors and a couple of curators. I was told by one that I could never talk to there guards. Are the slaves? Are they museum property?

I would only need permission from these people to participate. I have been thinking about this project more than two years. Guards have heads. They have opinions. They’re people.

This project is part of my ongoing research into art networks and institutions through AC Institute. Projects are: Critical Conversations in a Limo (DVD, completed 2006); Critical Conversations in a Limo, Melbourne 2007, DVD and edited book Artistic Bedfellows, Histories, Theories & Conversations in Collaborative Art Practices (UPA/Roman Littlefield, 2008) and Attached to the Mouse, Disney and Contemporary Art (UPA/Roman & Littlefield, 2006). Outsourced Critics, (AC Institute), f2010.

The finished video would be a multiple and available for everyone.
