Abstract of the Project Proposal Sculpture in a park

During 2010-2011, a thorough research is conducted on the vortex. Now, a need is emerged to create a sculpture that will produce the vortex in a natural way, without using any electro mechanical assistance, but the exploitation of natural wind, with the intention to permanently reproduce the phenomenon of the whirling leaves, that often occurs in exterior places. Several models are being built, with the use of geometrical shapes, such as the pentagon and the hexagon. The design of the proposed sculpture, which has hexagonal shape, allows the phenomenon to be occurred, irrespective of the wind’s direction. The sculpture is located in a park to take advantage of the leaves that will recurrently fall from the trees and will be gradually carried by the air masses into the sculpture. Whenever the three important parameters, the quantity of leaves, the humidity and the wind, are correct, a random visitor is only needed to witness the vortex forming in the centre of the glassy sculpture. Each wall is from anti-vandal glass and is 6 meters long and 2.5 meters high. The inner entrance is 55 cm, while the centre’s diameter, where the vortex is occurring, is 2.30 meters, making the experience intimate and personal. The sculpture consists mainly of glass, which from a specific angle creates up to three transparencies. The whole construction creates reflections of the environment, the fog, the sky. Furthermore, the schematic design refers to a labyrinth. Entering the symmetric sculpture to observe the vortex, the visitor is leaving an image behind him and by exiting he selects one of the six identical exits, driven most possibly to a different image.

Experimentation Cost – Scale 1: 2 (Wooden panels) approximately 1500€ Construction Cost: approximately 45000€
