Long Distance Relationship

For the exhibition, I am proposing to run a series of 100ft long connected extension cords powered from my studio (the creative place of production) to the exhibition space 2.2 miles away.

The energy it takes to sustain sometimes a tiny, seemingly insignificant effort may be an overwhelming journey. What are all efforts, adventures, problem solving startegies that one is willing to undertake to bring something to life? Like in personal relationships, the creation of art from initial seed to the final outcome is an ongoing process of revision, maintanance and tenuous connections. This piece is also interested in examining the space difference between the space art is made and where it exists in the world.

For the exhibition, I proposed to run a series of 100ft long connected extension cords powered from my studio (the creative place of production) to the exhibition space.. The effort would light a small nightlight with the text “ Long Distance Relationship” inscribed on it.

This 2.01893 mile distance (2.2 mile with over estimation) would cover several major streets and run discretely along residential and commercial sidewalks and backyards until it reaches it destination. I would be working with a team of isntallers to gain permission from residents affected by the cords. Technical Notes Resistence of electricity over long distance: for 12AWG ("12 gauge") copper wire-a reasonable estimate of the thickness of a power cords- you have .00187 Ohms per foot. With 12,144ft, that would be only 22.7 ohms which could actually work for the tiny nightlite.

Need for approximately 125 100ft extension cables. Potential use of Cable protector ramps across major roads, and or usage of city drain system (in which case waterproof tubing would be used with these junctures) Adopt a Cable Campaign for residents in vicinity of route who would be responsible for watching over con- nections of the cable. A pledge list would be included in the exhibition.
