God Only Knows Concept: Inside a sand pit and framed from behind by a blue wooden wall, I will dig my hands and feet into Dublin sand, collecting mounds of the material. Then I will elevate both hands and feet above the ground, attempting to hold this as a static pose. The actions are repeated over four hours. An elongated and abstracted version of “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys will play at a low volume. This track will also play each hour.
Explanation:
I would like to travel to some of the numerous coastal areas and islands off Dublin to collect sand, reflecting on the discovery on these islands of several mazes, which are supposedly linked to Pagan fertility and agricultural rituals.
Sand is a naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles. I will present, demonstrate, offer up and volunteer this material from the intermediate spaces between land and sea.
Brian Wilson once described the song ‘God only Knows’ was … "like being blind but in being blind, you can see more. You close your eyes; you're able to see a place or something that's happening."…
I am interested in exploring the idea of blind faith.
Production Information:
The sandpit and back wall will be constructed on-site from wood.
The audio track is stretched from 2:49 minutes to 1 hour using audio editing software.
-The performance should happen on the opening night of the exhibition and will last four hours.
Each hour will be documented on video. This video will be edited and then projected in the space along with the sandpit / wall for the duration of the exhibition.
This work will function in various internal spaces with a consideration of appropriate lighting conditions for the installation of the video.
I would also require some help accessing routes and means of travel to some of the islands.
I will also need access to a workshop and some assistance in constructing the sandpit.
Materials:
Wood – Two sheets of enforced plywood approximately 112 cm x 168 cm, minimum 1 cm thick – Three lengths of 5cm x 1cm wood
Blue Paint – I will choose the specific colour
Sand – an adequate amount to fill the sand pit (to be collected by the artist)
CD Player / Sound system
Video projector
DVD Player
I will bring video camera / tripod / dvd’s and a laptop to edit the video.
