Liesbet & Piki would like to propose some video installations which were never shown and/or not shown in a way they were intented to, namely in context of architectural spaces.

Piki & Liesbets’ video projects start from the playful observation of life, nature and the physical world. Out of these perceptions, elements are selected and put into continuous rhythmic and flowing motions. They consist merely of action upon reaction, sound, architectural structure, lightness and air. In that sense the videos show a hint of a new utopian placid place. Piki and Liesbet seek to represent new spaces in which cultural elements and media are absent.

One of our favorite projects is ‘Au Suivant’.

1 - Au Suivant 2009

A strip was digitally cut from the chrome stove pipe out of Liesbets’ kitchen.

This metal strip was then copied digitally 4 times. In the computer these 4 strips were steered via numerals, - and +’s.

We calculated the numerals so that it seemed that each metal strip reacted in movement onto another movement. It was a long process of carefully searching to simulate in a virtual language, logical reactions upon reactions.

We made several versions of ‘AU Suivant’ and the initial idea was to create these videos and movements on the basis of the architectural structures of the space and surfaces of walls on which we would project them. Fragment of project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL79js1XIJM

2 - ‘Ice’ 2010

This project was created around a bubble, made of soap, sugar and glycerine. It was filmed (winter) at 17 pm late afternoon with temperatures outside of -7 degrees. The idea was as minimal as possible to capture nature, late winter daylight and silhouettes of trees in such a simple element and to simulate an almost other micro planet.

Fragment of project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTeAhRZkkBQ&feature=related

3 - ‘Pick up the pieces’ 2011

A similar project to ‘Au Suivant’, ‘Pick up the pieces’ starts again from elements selected out of the observations of nature. Different trees in the woods were chosen on the basis of light and sunshine that fell upon them and photographed. These trunks then were steered into motion again digitally into a suprematic space, on the bases of numerals. (These techniques are used to target or steer bombs into space etc…) The soundscape at this stage becomes more and more important and is carefully composed with more different layers. The tree trunks become abstract elements to become part within their choreography of the structured architectural spaces. Fragment of project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsNvs12TiX0&feature=related

4 - ‘Turmoil’ 2011 (unfinished)

Again, an element taken out of life gets selected and digitally cut out. In this case a group of densely-lived-in houses or apartments. These houses are filmed on the bases of the structures of the in situ exposition spaces. We wanted these group of apartments or houses then to bounce to and fro like a giant swing boat one might find on a big playground. The houses go from one side to the wall to the other side, like a huge swing, with lots of noices. The movements have to be smooth and hefty. The soundscape for this project is very important. Piki and Liesbet have been driving around and searching for the right house structures and apartments. This was not so easy since lots of elements like trees, signs etc mingle with a nicely structured and clean architectural view . For the sounds as well a lot of research still has to be done. We would like to go to a big amusement park were one has these large swinging boats and in which people scream and shout along the swinging movements. These human sounds we would like to combine with sounds from falling porcelain, glasses, dishes etc… The project aims to be designed in context of the architectural space, which is so important in this work. ‘Turmoil’ contains humor but at the same time translates in a minimal and non-narrative language an unsettling angle of a world in turmoil and extreme insecurity.

‘Au Suivant’, ‘Ice’ and ‘Pick up the pieces’ and so far ‘Turmoil’ were never shown within a rational set up of video – structure opposed to the architectural-space-expo structure. ‘Au Suivant’ was shown several times in a small way or on a flatscreen, which Piki & Liesbet never designed it for.

Liesbet en Piki s’ opinion is that some video works have to be more conceived and designed in function of particular spaces. And that the art spaces should be in communication, in a ‘flow’ with the artworks that are on display.

The interaction between certain art and space could define an utopian, meditative ‘new’ space within the restless streets of societies. These specific modern spaces (small or large) are hard to find anywhere. An important exhibition space in Brussels , specializing in video and archiving video projects has refused so far to take up these works for exhibition or for their video library. Especially ‘Au Suivant’. For this reason we would like to show ‘Au Suivant’ to you, the agency of Unrealized Projects.
