TRADUTRADITORE from Italian traduttore/traditore, translator/traitor; human 1, machine 0.
DESCRIPTION
from Italian traduttore/traditore, translator/traitor; human 1, machine 0.
Tradutraditore is an interactive installation. It’s composed of two independent but complementary elements: an Internet-connected PC with a monitor on which users’ real time interaction can be appreciated, and a series of PC-connected monitors showing looping texts previously translated between various languages by automatic translators. (see image #1) Interaction with the art work is possible via the tradutraditore.info web page, where suggested sentences can be translated with ease. Looping texts are the result of an aestetic, arbitrary, ludic and methodic process. Tradutraditore stimulates thought about translation issues in global communications, investigating the related communication processes and society / technology relationship. Tradutraditore develops from linguistic systems deconstruction and subsequent sentences contruction done by users' interaction and translation softwares.
From several definitions of language we pinpoint the preminent function of communication - language as communication, both in speech and written word.
In order to achieve satisfactory global communication, language, specifically in its dynamic form, has evolved into a barrier to overcome. Automatic translation has become the ultimate goal in the apogee of social networks and globalized communication. TRADUTRADITORE emphasizes the cultural legacy brought to text by each speaker and compares it to automatic software translations. Tradutraditore invites users to translate, to “transmigrate and transgress”, because every translation implies both an act of creation and betrayal of those words/concepts being translated. DEVELOPMENT
Installation ranges from both low tech, recycling dismantled hardware, to up-to-date Internet resources such as Twitter. Users who visit http://tradutraditore.info can actively interact with and be part of the art work using personal twitter accounts and #hashtags. In fact, they’re kindly invited to translate suggested sentences into other languages. Translated sentences enter the body of work and become available to others to be translated; but, in order not to give users hints about the meaning of the phrase but leaving it to personal interpretation, only the last translated sentence is made visible online". Users' input, as the result of specific social and cultural basic identificators, which trascends simple code knowledge, will optimize the understanding of customs. Intervention by users/visitors will create a “broken chain.” Right at the breaking point is where we find what we are looking for: a symbolic and polysemic reading. (see image #3) Tradutraditore looping texts automatic translation dynamic is as described: language A -->> language B -->> language C -->> language B -->> language A. Unfragmented phrases are transformed into as many others, and in the same language, but with subverted meaning: the paraphrase of superficiality. Following Babel fish modus operandi which, by permitting the exact comprehension of all thoughts effectively transformed in words, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation, TRADUTRADITORE references the universe of culturals differences to achieve a uniquivocal understanding.
