Incongruous Runaway Homes, to run away with or to run to. A formulation of childhood visions
The Runaway Roulotte was to be made of wooden planks and mud! A bicycle wheel with pedals attached to it and cart wheels. Its most important feature was that it would be child powered, an 8-year-old girl. It bothered me to use horse power - in the typical "gypsy imagery"- I am too fond of the animals. Anyway I thought it would be too conspicuous. The Roulotte should provide all a mobile home does, except for a toilet; vacant lots would provide for that.
The Hollow Fit for an 8 year old child or a minuscule adult. It is to be found or carved into a large trunk of a living tree. It has to be in a German forest but the climate has to be temperate!!! The child has to wander through the forest until she gets to the Hollow, which is to become her home. She is to share it with other animals, like squirrels and foxes.
The most important of the furnishings in both of these "homes" was to be the bed. Under its fluffy covers, in which one can hide and feel secure, lies the only constant element in this journey towards the unknown.
These two project ideas were first presented in the trial edition of a book project called Home fir lost ideas, by Catherine Griffiths & Daniel Rees, (Berlin 2006). They were not included in the subsequent edition of the book.
