Flags of Empire would be a circle of flagpoles each flying a flag of a past or present empire. The flags are from the following countries: Japan, Spain (17th century flag), Nazi Germany, France, Rome (vexillum from the ancient Roman Empire), Russia, Ottoman Empire, United Kingdom and United States of America. All flags are at the same height and no flag is presented in any more prominent position than any other. The project provokes by equating these empires—without engaging the historical specificity and unique circumstances of each. As the flagpoles are arranged in a circle, the piece can be viewed from any location. It should be displayed in a prominent civic space, including, but not limited to in front of an art museum.
