In ecology, organisms avoid observation or detection by other organisms though camouflage, transparency, or mimicry. In the project Camoufoliaged, trees, and bushes near or within a museum setting are covered in various degrees of printed and sewn fabric to evoke the visual impact of foliage mimicry. On closer inspection they are revealed to be cloth resembling heavy foliage, in fact they have been Camoufoliaged. Reminiscent of ghillie or yowie suits, a type of camouflage clothing designed to resemble heavy foliage to protect hunters in the wild. Hunters are known to wear a ghillie suit to blend into their surroundings and conceal themselves from enemies or targets. The suit gives the wearer's outline a three-dimensional breakup, rather than a linear one, moving in the wind in the same way as surrounding foliage. Camoufoliaged “covers” trees by evoking a human shape wearing a foliage covering. The “Camoufoliaged suits “ will be covered in loose strips of hand printed cloth made to look like leaves and twigs, and on closer inspection these suits conceal strips with messages. These messages will reveal hopes hope for the environment, collected from The Wish Machine, ( HYPERLINK "http://www.wishmachine.com" www.wishmachine.com ) and also ones of warning from environmental activists. I envisioned Camoufoliaged to be one of play intertwined with a message calling for environmental awareness through the biomorphic transformation of trees into human figures.
