Social Walls™ A Proposal for an Environmental Sculpture 25 November 2013 David Averbuch

This proposed artwork has just four walls in a square shape, yet it represents a new idea. Each wall will be divided into small equal areas, henceforth called pictures, and each picture will be assigned to one interested resident of the town where it will be erected, and that person will have the right to decorate his picture, as he/she wishes.

I anticipate that within a short time after the release of the walls to their owners, the pictures on these raw walls will be decorated in various ways, each picture according to the character, the imagination and the talent of its owner, and even though many of the pictures will probably be cliché - the combined result will be a varied, colorful, beautiful artwork, whose concept was designed by me, the infrastructure is erected by the municipality, and the finish is accomplished by the community. I anticipate that people will often visit this environmental sculpture, examine the pictures, express their opinions, photograph the sculpture and photograph with the sculpture.

The owners of the pictures will be town residents who will agree to take part in an initially-unknown art project that will be declared upon in public. Close to the appointed time of the "release" of the sculpture each picture owner will receive a message with the following contents:

  1. A formal legal declaration that he/she is the owner of a picture and its identification, e.g.: north, external, 2, 8.
  2. What he/she may do, e.g.: decorate the picture, paint it, write on it, glue a painted canvas or small objects to it, sell the picture, and ignore it.
  3. What he/she is not allowed to do, e.g.: paint beyond his picture borders, weld, drill, scratch the picture, advertise, and offend his neighbors.

The municipality will administrate a list of the pictures' owners. Starting from the second year the owners will pay a yearly fee for maintaining the site and handling the ownership records. A fee will also be requested when transferring ownership of a picture (at free market price), as with any real-estate property.

The following is a description of the sculpture: 1. It will be made of 4 identical walls (or boards) that form a symmetric square whose side length will be 900cm. A wall length will be 502cm. 2. The height of a wall will be 98cm, and it will be mounted on columns of height 120cm. 3. Each surface of a wall will be divided into pictures of size 48cm x 30cm (golden ratio), surrounded by 2cm margins. Thus the number of pictures will be: 4 walls * 2 sides * 3 rows * 10 columns = 240 pictures .

I chose the name Social Walls for the sculpture after the term social networks, but unlike those networks with their synthetic friendships, the Social Walls will be a place where people can truly meet and conduct human interaction among them.

Several notes: 1. The walls will be made of some material that is available at your area. There are several possibilities, e.g., some metal and smooth concrete. 2. A person may possesses only one picture no matter how rich he is! 3. The Social Walls should be erected in an open space, e.g., a park or a big paved square. 4. A 15m x 15m, 4m high roof will give some protection to the sculpture and its visitors from the weather. 5. If – in the future - not enough residents will show interest in this project and too many of the pictures will be neglected then the environmental sculpture will be removed. 6. Picture owners may also create at home and attach their artwork to the wall. 7. I have many more minor implementation notes but since they are not vital for reviewing the proposal I did not include them here in order to keep this document small and clear.
