Enter Slowly – An Idea for a Proposal in Progress
An open-ended, evolving, accumulative, partial, possible installation……
The Trailer: for the project or maybe the project only ever exists as a trailer, as an idea – a proposal! The Title Sequence: I love Saul Bass’ title sequences and am a big fan of title sequences in general so the film would definitely have to have one, or maybe there is a title sequence for the whole project, or maybe the project is the title sequence – is this list of possibilities.
The Poster: possibly hand-painted with a limited edition print – the study for a design is in progress.
The Characters: Charles (known as C) & wife, Eileen (known as E) & partner - Jean, Madame Marie-Louise, Peter the doctor (murdered by), the gardener, Robin the collector & dealer & the family of his dead partner, Shady Lady and many more.
The Video: footage of both real (exterior) and fake (interior) Cabanon, E1027, Roquebrune Cap martin & constructed sets in my studio.
I imagine the video installation as a double-channel piece as the premise of the work has a dual nature and was always based on the relationships between fact & fiction, the real and the constructed, between 2 central characters, 2 buildings, inside & outside. The video/s would open & close with shots of waves crashing on the rocks in the bay at Roquebrune Cap Martin, not unlike the opening scene from Agatha Christie’s Endless Night when the main protagonist wanders through Gipsy’s Acre, dreaming of his ambition to have the perfect house built for him, in this remote location. The films’ structures would flip between the 2 monitors presenting scenes from a partially narrative story which unfold in a non-linear way – unlike Christie’s story which culminates in a melodramatic climax, these filmic fragments would present glimpses of a story, settings and characters.
The Sculptural Objects/ Props etc: the video monitors; hand-made rugs based on customised designs from E1027; furniture – stools based on the ones from the Cabanon can be sat on to watch the video; screens loosely based on Eileen Gray’s designs can be used as free-standing exhibition walls for mounting images and to partition the space.
The Texts: script,
The Drawings: portraits,
The Photographs, re-photographs:
The Archive:
The Wall-paintings: I can imagine Enter Slowly (the title of the project) as a large-format wall-painting, or maybe this is the project in itself!
The Soundtrack: a specifically composed score would sound something like a cross-between minimal, atmospheric black-metal and a typically noirish soundtrack.
Locations: RIBA - London, Roquebrune - Cote d’Azur, studio – East London.
Research contexts: the real and the (re) constructed, myth, narrative (cultural & personal), non-narrative, fact & fiction, architecture, design, desire, obsession, death, murder, mystery.
