Accumulation of space – idea for an exhibition

For me, space is a form of sculpture. It is generally formless, but its manifestations assume definite formal shapes. These forms—imagined, found, constructed—appear in my works as projects, drawings, computer simulations or objects. Space and sculptural forms inherent in it are rich in meanings and contexts. They are associated with important places or utopian ideas. The places which I choose to fix in photographic images are always special for me. Usually, I record architecture in various countries (eg. Venetial palazzos or temples in Kyoto), countryside, various accidentally observed situations, striking due to the accidental juxtaposition of objects. The ideas echo my fascination with optical illusions, impossible figures, ambiguous objects, mirror reflections and anamorphoses. I have been visualising them as drawings, photographs and objects for many years. The exhibition “Accumulation of Space” would consist of 3 series showing places and their representations, each representation in the form of a pyramid. One series would show forms quasi-sculptural, like buildings, ready-mades or natural forms. Another one would comprise my drawings, collages, photogrammes, computer graphics and objects. The third one would present selected documentation of my former installations and exhibitions dealing with space and sculptural forms existing in space. All pieces in these 3 series would be shaped in the form of small pyramids and orderly arranged on the wall of a gallery. The pyramid is one of the basic spatial forms, with a strong emotional context and a big load of energy. Built out of a flat image representing a specific spatial situation, it shows a completely different structure of space suggested by the images on its triangular faces. It turns real space into virtual space, curved and incoherent, which will launch our imagination into spaces other than the one defined by Euclidean geometry.
